The Hindustani Sangeet Mandal (Indian Music Forum) is an Ottawa-based organization formed in 2002 to promote knowledge, awareness, and appreciation of North Indian classical vocal and instrumental music among Canadians in the Ottawa area.
The Forum is headed by N. Subramani, an avid music lover. Supporting classical music has been important to Subramani all his life; he comes from a traditional Indian family where classical music was integral to religious observance and a marker of social status. After helping to run the first incarnation of the Hindustani Sangeet Mandal in the 1980s and watching the second flounder in the mid-nineties, Subramani decided to revive it a third time in 2002, recruiting volunteers and seeking professional musicians to put on shows in Ottawa.
The Forum is run through the dedication of Ottawa volunteers, who donate their time to the cause of advancing the knowledge and appreciation of Hindustani music. Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering at one of our events! We also rely heavily on the support of our Gold Circle Sponsors, who provide a large part of the the financial backing necessary to make our activities possible.
Recognizing the need to promote the next generation of artists as well as the financial constraints of being in a city with a smaller audience base, the Hindustani Sangeet Mandal attempts to bring the finest of the next generation of vocalists and instrumentalists from India. Not only does this provide the artists with needed exposure to the North American audience, but it exposes Ottawa to outstanding talent that is as deserving of recognition as the maestros who dominate main stages around the world.
